MAGOO

One sweet loving determined old man

I was bless In January to have been able to help Halo Food and FreeKibble.com distribute 39,000 pounds of Halo Spot Stew.  I drove to Georgia to meet with some of the rescues and to pick up a few dogs I had waiting for me there. The morning was icy and sleet was coming down but it was beautiful to see so many rescues get such great food.  I was then planning on coming back to Florida and getting ready for the distribution of food in Florida.  By the time everyone was loaded I was numb with cold and went back to the hotel.  I then received a call about a 14 year poodle that needed rescue or would go to shelter.  The wife had died and the husband could not keep.  That was all that was known about this dog. and of course I said ok.

I was not at all prepared for the sight that I was to see when this dog was brought into the hotel room.  The smell was horrid and his mouth oozed a horrid pus filled infection.  He was filthy could not open his mouth and was in pain.  Evidently the man said the dog had been gotten "ahold" of by another dog.  He then had put the dog in a shed he said for two weeks.  Well I was worried sick.  It was Saturday and I was leaving to go back to Florida and this dog needed immediate care.  I called Margrit of HS Inverness and asked if I could bring the dog by on my way home for Dr. Fox to look at as I was too concerned to make him wait.  We then tried to cut the hair from around his eyes which were also infected and his mouth.  I was determined that he was not sleeping in the bed with me but after hearing hsi cries I gave him some pain meds and wrapped him in a sheet and snuggled him next to me.

Donna made some calls and we found out a bit more about this owner.  The dog has been attacked by another dog and might have a fractured jaw.  Needless to say I was beginning to get very infuriated with this person to have left this old dog in this condition.  He weighed less than fice pounds but was easily at least 12 inches tall.  If you look at the third picture above you will also see that he has no signs of a penis.  It was matted under inched of hair pressed up against the skin.  We have no idea how he was able to urinate.

Margrit met me at 6 pm on Hwy 75 to take him to HS Inverness to see Dr Fox first thing.  She was as distressed about him as I was.  Results were that yes he did have a fractured jaw - BUT there was no way to tell if it was from another dog or the horrid infection that was in his mouth which has made its way into the back eye walls as well.  We named the dog Magoo as he could barely see.  All of his teeth had to be pulled.  The fracture could not be fixed as the jaw was so infected it risked another break in trying to fix it.

Magoo came home several days later.  Since being home he has to be fed with a bottle - his mouth is full of stitches, his eyes are still weeping but there is no longer the infection literally pouring from his mouth.  We have sent information, vet report and tons of pictures to animal control in hopes of this owner having to face what he has done to Magoo.  This was not two weeks of neglect - but more like years of neglect.  Magoo has a strong will to live.  He now after a week will cry for me to feed him, or if his blanket comes off at night.  He has been shaved and although it will take more surgery and a lot of time to heal him he is determined to make it.  He has to be fed every few hours with a bottle to keep enough nutrition in him.  It hurts him to eat and after a few ounces he is tired and sore so we stop for a few hours.  He is on antiobiotics, pain meds, nutrients and vitamin b shots.  He loves his sweaters and loves the times he gets to come out and be on the bed with me.  We were not able to get all the stained hair around his face due to the pain in his mouth but are hoping to give him a bath and a closer cut in the next week or so.
